2026 McDonald Fellowships Open for Applications

Young researchers from low- and middle-income countries can now apply for the 2026 McDonald Fellowships, an extraordinary international opportunity provided by the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation (MSIF).

These two-year fellowships are designed to empower early-career researchers in the field of multiple sclerosis (MS) by enabling them to train at a research institution outside their home country — and bring new expertise back to advance MS research locally.

What the McDonald Fellowship Offers?

Each selected fellow receives:

  • €55,000 annually (for two years), disbursed to the host institution to support research training.
  • The chance to gain hands-on experience in cutting-edge MS research and techniques.
  • The opportunity to return home and build or enhance MS research capacity.

Since its inception in 2007, this fellowship has benefited over 30 researchers from countries such as Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Malawi, Mongolia, Argentina, and many more. Fellows have participated in major conferences like ECTRIMS, the European Academy of Neurology, and the Tykeson Fellows Conference.

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be from a low- or middle-income country.
  • Hold at least a postgraduate-level qualification (e.g., MSc or PhD).
  • Have a research focus relevant to multiple sclerosis.
  • Secure a host supervisor and project at an institution outside their country before applying.

Full eligibility criteria and the application link can be found on the MSIF website.
