The Gates Scholarship 2026 is Now Open for Foreign Student Applications
If you’re a U.S. citizen or permanent resident with roots beyond America’s borders — maybe you were born abroad or are the first in your family to attend college — the Gates Scholarship (TGS) could be your golden ticket to a fully funded undergraduate education in the United States.
The Gates Scholarship 2025 application is now open, offering 300 highly selective, full-cost awards for exceptional high school seniors from low-income households. Let’s walk you through this life-changing opportunity step by step.
What Is the Gates Scholarship?
The Gates Scholarship is a prestigious, last-dollar scholarship that covers the entire cost of attendance not already covered by other financial aid or the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). That includes tuition, fees, room and board, books, and even transportation.
Launched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, this scholarship aims to empower talented students from underrepresented backgrounds to reach their fullest potential at any accredited U.S. college or university.
What Does the Scholarship Cover?
Once awarded, recipients receive funding for:
- Tuition and fees
- Room and board
- Books and academic supplies
- Transportation and other personal costs
In addition to funding, scholars gain mentorship, networking opportunities, and career guidance from the Gates network.
Who Can Apply?
To qualify for the Gates Scholarship, you must meet all of the following criteria:
- Be a high school senior in the U.S. graduating in 2025
- Be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident (foreign-born U.S. citizens are eligible!)
- Be Pell Grant-eligible (meaning your household demonstrates financial need)
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale
- Identify as African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian & Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American
- Plan to enroll full-time in a four (04) year program at an accredited U.S. college or university starting in Fall 2025
This scholarship is not open to international students without U.S. citizenship or permanent residency — but naturalized citizens, first-generation Americans, and DACA-ineligible immigrants with legal U.S. status may qualify.
