Brazil’s CAPES-Humboldt Research Fellowship for 2025 (25th Batch)
Brazilian postdoctoral and experienced researchers now have the chance to advance their academic careers internationally through the CAPES-Humboldt Research Fellowship, a collaboration between CAPES (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior) and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany. The programme offers the opportunity to carry out independent research at leading German universities and research institutions, with the aim of fostering long-term academic collaboration between Brazil and Germany.
Duration and Structure
Postdoctoral researchers can undertake research stays ranging from six to 24 months, while experienced researchers are eligible for stays of six to 18 months. Both categories have the flexibility to divide their fellowship period into up to three separate visits within three years, allowing for a tailored research schedule.
Funding and Benefits
The fellowship provides a monthly stipend of €2,700 for postdocs and €3,200 for experienced researchers. Additional support includes travel allowances, family benefits, intensive German language courses for fellows and their partners before starting the programme, and research cost subsidies for host institutions. Alumni are also eligible for further sponsorship to support renewed research stays and ongoing collaboration after the initial fellowship.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be Brazilian citizens residing in Brazil. Postdoctoral candidates should have completed their PhD within the last four years, while experienced researchers must have earned their doctorate within the past twelve years. A strong academic track record, with publications in internationally recognised journals or publishing houses, is essential. Candidates must also secure a host institution in Germany with confirmed research facilities before applying.
Application Process and Deadline
Applications must be submitted online to both CAPES and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Required documents include a CV, a detailed research outline, a complete list of publications, a doctoral certificate, and a host’s statement confirming research facilities.
For Call 25, the application period runs from 2 June 2025 to 28 November 2025, with research stays scheduled to start between September 2026 and May 2027.
