Iceland Opens Scholarships for BA in Icelandic as a Second Language 2026

The Icelandic Ministry of Culture, Innovation and Higher Education has announced its annual scholarship program for international students wishing to pursue the BA in Icelandic as a Second Language at the University of Iceland, Reykjavík. The program, administered by the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies, provides around 12 scholarships each academic year and runs from September 1 to May 31.

What the Scholarship Covers?

The scholarship package is designed to support international learners during their studies in Reykjavík. It includes:

  1. Full registration fees at the University of Iceland.
  2. A monthly stipend to cover basic living expenses from September to April.
  3. Access to student housing at Gamli Garður dormitory, ensuring affordable accommodation near campus.

This support makes studying in Iceland more accessible for students committed to mastering the Icelandic language.

Who Can Apply

The scholarship targets students who already have a foundation in humanities and a basic understanding of Icelandic. Eligibility requirements include:

  1. At least one year of completed university studies in humanities.
  2. Basic knowledge of Icelandic equivalent to completing the free Icelandic Online 1 and 2 courses.
  3. English proficiency, as English is used as a secondary language of instruction in early stages.
  4. Applicants under 35 years are usually given preference.

Application Timeline

The application process follows strict deadlines:

  • Application Submission: By December 1, 2025 (postmarked; email applications not accepted).
  • Results Announcement: January 2026.
  • University Admission Deadline: February 15, 2026, for successful scholarship holders.
  • Language Placement Exams: June 2026, to determine placement within the BA programme.

Scholarships may be renewed for up to three academic years if requirements are met.
