APEX awards 2025 by Royal Society

Are you an established researcher with a drive to solve complex societal challenges through interdisciplinary collaboration? The Royal Society APEX Awards 2025 could be the perfect funding opportunity for you.

In collaboration with the British Academy, the Royal Academy of Engineering, and supported by the Leverhulme Trust, the APEX Awards (Academies Partnership in Supporting Excellence in Cross-disciplinary research) support independent researchers working across disciplinary boundaries—especially between science, engineering, social sciences, and the humanities.

What is the APEX Award All About?

The APEX Awards are designed to:

  • Promote high-level collaborations across disciplines
  • Support innovative, curiosity-driven research unlikely to be funded through conventional programs
  • Provide seed funding for researchers venturing into new interdisciplinary areas
  • Encourage projects that can benefit society at large

The Royal Society actively champions equity, diversity, and inclusion, and encourages applications from researchers of all backgrounds and career experiences.

What Does the APEX Award Offer?

Successful applicants can receive:

  • Up to £200,000 for interdisciplinary research
  • Funds for research assistants, PhD/Master’s/undergraduate students, and teaching replacement
  • Up to £10,000 for public engagement activities
  • Flexible support tailored for cross-institutional and cross-disciplinary collaborations

  • Are based at a UK university or not-for-profit research institution

  • Propose a project that spans more than one academy’s remit

Note: Projects that fall solely under one academy’s scope (e.g., only engineering, only social sciences) will not be considered.
