Canada Graduate Research Scholarship 2025 Inviting Applications

Are you pursuing or planning to begin a research-oriented PhD? Here’s your golden opportunity to win one of the most prestigious doctoral funding awards in North America! The Canada Graduate Research Scholarship – Doctoral program (CGRS D) is now accepting applications for the 2026 cohort.

This tri-agency scholarship—jointly administered by CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC—aims to support high-caliber students whose innovative research will contribute to Canada’s knowledge economy and beyond.


Funding Package

Each awardee of the CGRS Doctoral Scholarship will receive:

  • CAD $40,000 per year
  • Tenure: 36 months (3 years)
  • Study Location: Any eligible Canadian institution or, for some Canadian citizens, a qualified international institution
  • Total Value: Up to CAD $120,000

This generous package supports tuition, research, and living costs—allowing recipients to focus fully on their groundbreaking research.


Eligibility At a Glance

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Have completed no more than 36 months of full-time doctoral-level study by December 31 of the application year.
  • Be enrolled at or applying to an eligible Canadian institution (or Canadian citizens studying abroad with at least one Canadian degree).
  • Be applying to a research-focused doctoral program that includes a major thesis, dissertation, or equivalent scholarly work.
  • International applicants are eligible—up to 15% of total awards will go to non-Canadian students enrolled in Canadian institutions.
  • Not have previously received a doctoral-level scholarship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.

  • Natural Sciences & Engineering (NSERC)
  • Social Sciences & Humanities (SSHRC).

Application Timeline

The application window is now open, and deadlines vary depending on your application route:

  • Through Canadian Institutions: Internal deadlines are typically earlier than the agency deadline—check with your university’s graduate studies office immediately.
  • Direct to Agency (CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC):
    Final Deadline: October 17, 2025, at 8:00 PM ET

Applicants will be notified of results by April 30, 2026. Successful candidates are expected to begin or continue their research from May 2026 onward, depending on institutional schedules
