James Madison Graduate Fellowship 2026 Open
The James Madison Graduate Fellowships—established by the U.S. Congress—are now open for the 2026 cycle, inviting passionate educators and aspiring teachers to deepen their understanding of the U.S. Constitution. This prestigious program honors the legacy of James Madison by funding master’s degrees that emphasize constitutional principles, their historical roots, and their continuing development.
Fellows not only enhance their academic expertise but also carry forward Madisonian values into classrooms, shaping future generations of American citizens.
Fellowship offering
Each fellowship offers up to $24,000 in total, prorated over the period of study, with a maximum of $12,000 per academic year. The award covers tuition, required fees, books, and, when applicable, room and board for those who must reside away from home. Additionally, fellows attend the four (04) week Summer Institute on the U.S. Constitution in Washington, D.C., at no cost—earning six graduate credits as part of their program.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Be a current or aspiring secondary school teacher (grades 7–12) of American history, American government, or civics.
- Hold a bachelor’s degree (or earn one by August 31, 2026).
Two (02) fellowship tracks are available:
- Junior Fellowships – For college seniors and graduates without teaching experience, requiring full-time completion in two years.
- Senior Fellowships – For current teachers, allowing up to five years for part-time study.
Special consideration is also given through the Admiral Paul A. Yost, Jr.-James Madison Fellowship for eligible applicants with honorable U.S. military service. All fellows must fulfill a teaching service obligation—one academic year for each year of funding—preferably in the state where they earned their fellowship.
