PhD Scholarship 2025 in Green Chemistry at Technical University of Denmark
The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has opened applications for a fully funded 3-year PhD scholarship in Green Chemistry, set to commence from February 1, 2026, or soon after. This is a unique opportunity for talented and ambitious researchers to contribute to developing sustainable chemical processes at one of Europe’s leading technical institutions.
Funded directly by DTU, this fellowship will be hosted at the Department of Chemistry, under the guidance of Professors Sebastian Meier and Robert Madsen, and will include international collaboration with Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore, where a research stay is part of the program.
Research Focus and Project Scope
The research will investigate novel chemical reactions in water under mild and environmentally friendly conditions, with a strong emphasis on sustainable catalysts and green solvent systems. The project will use advanced NMR spectroscopy and computational analysis to discover and optimize chemical reactions aimed at producing pharmaceutical precursors, energy storage compounds, and polymer building blocks.
The interdisciplinary approach integrates physical chemistry, organic synthesis, cheminformatics, and kinetic modeling to understand how solvent interactions and reaction mechanisms can be exploited to drive innovation in green chemistry.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and apply NMR methods for discovering new reaction pathways.
- Conduct environmentally responsible organic synthesis in aqueous media.
- Analyze time-resolved chemical data computationally.
- Participate in supervision of BSc and MSc student researchers.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must hold a two-year Master’s degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent in chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry, or biophysics by the time of enrollment. Preferred candidates will have experience in experimental organic chemistry, NMR spectroscopy, kinetic modeling, and/or cheminformatics.
Strong motivation, the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and excellent communication skills in English are essential.
Funding and Employment Terms
The scholarship offers:
- A full-time, salaried PhD position for three years.
- Salary and terms according to the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations’ collective agreement.
- Support for relocation to Denmark, including access to DTU’s PhD relocation support seminars.
