University of Hawaii MS, PhD, Postdoc Scholarships 2025
Honolulu, Hawaii – The Marine Innovation Lab for Leading-edge Oceanography (MILLO Group) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa is seeking passionate individuals to join their team for Fall 2025. With a focus on cutting-edge research and a commitment to inclusivity and collaboration, MILLO offers exciting opportunities for MS, PhD, and postdoctoral researchers in the field of oceanography.
Located within the Department of Ocean and Resources Engineering (ORE) at the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), MILLO fosters a dynamic research environment. The group seeks individuals with strong technical skills in areas such as coding for data analysis, embedded software design, deep learning applications, and computer-aided design.
Ideal candidates will possess a growth mindset, a passion for marine science, and excellent problem-solving and communication skills. While technical proficiency is essential, MILLO prioritizes individuals with a “MacGyver-like” approach to challenges and welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds, including those without formal engineering degrees.
MS and PhD positions offer comprehensive support, including a stipend, full tuition coverage, benefits, and travel support. The group is particularly interested in students whose research aligns with MILLO’s core themes, such as the development of innovative technologies for oceanographic observation and exploration. One exciting project for this recruitment cycle involves designing and building autosamplers for reef metabolism studies.
Applicants for Fall 2025 must be eligible for admission to the MS or PhD programs at ORE. Non-engineering students with relevant technical backgrounds may also gain entry through the Department of Oceanography (OCE), contingent on securing external funding.

In addition to graduate positions, MILLO welcomes applications from postdoctoral researchers. Postdoctoral fellows at MILLO are expected to mentor junior researchers and may have the opportunity to establish their own lab programs. Interested postdocs are encouraged to apply early to facilitate fellowship or grant funding applications.
